Coaching Staff


Gene Suhr
Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach

Gene Suhr is in his first season on the Wildcat football coaching staff, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Suhr comes to Wayne State after coaching 23 seasons at Papillion-LaVista High School, posting an impressive 174-74 mark as Monarchs' coach.  He won Class A State Championships in 1990 and 1996 while earning state runner up finishes in 1985, 1995 and 1997.  His overall high school coaching record was 200-95.

The University of Nebaska-Omaha graduate started his coaching career at Omaha Gross, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach.  Suhr was named head coach at Ord High School in 1979 and compiled a 26-21 mark before being named head coach at Papillion-LaVista High School.

Alex Wood
Assistant Coach/Defensive Backs, Special Teams

Alex Wood begins his first season as a member of the Wayne State College football coaching staff, serving as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator.  He also serves as equipment coordinator for all 15 sports at Wayne State College.

The 1996 graduate of Winston-Salem State in North Carolina comes to Wayne State after spending two seasons at Nebraska-Omaha where he was special teams coordinator and coached the defensive line after working with outside linebackers in the spring of 2006.  Before that, Wood coached two seasons (20004 and 2005) as secondary coach, special teams coach and video coordinator at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.  He then coached one season at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina (2003-04) and was at Livingstone College in 2002.

Wood also coached at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota from 1999-2002, serving as the team's defensive line coach and special team coordinator.  He served one season as an assistant coach at Morgan State University (1998) and James Madison University (1997) and began his extensive coaching career at Lexington Senior High School (North Carolina) in 1996.

Alex has two children, a son (Aaron) and a daughter (Alexis) and resides in Wayne.


Scott McLaughlin
Graduate Assistant/Defensive Line

Scott McLaughlin is in his first season as a graduate assistant football coach at Wayne State College, working with the defensive lineman.  McLaughlin is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Omaha and played defensive line for the Mavericks.  He also served as a student assistant at UNO and served as the team's video coordinator for three seasons before coming to Wayne State College.

In high school, Scott earned Class A All-State honors at Millard West after recording 11 sacks and 19 tackles for loss as a senior to earn honorary captain honors on the Class A All-State Defensive Team.

McLaughlin, who earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in continuing education, is working on his master's degree at Wayne State College in sport management and resides in Wayne.


Kelvin Bell
Graduate Assistant Coach/Offensive Line

Kelvin Bell is in his first year as a graduate assistant football coach at Wayne State College coaching the offensive line.

Bell comes to Wayne State after serving two seasons (2006-07) as offensive line coach at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.  His first coaching job was at Regina High School in Iowa City, Iowa from 2003-05 where Bell served as an assistant coach and weight room supervisor.  Bell received his bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from the University of Iowa in 2006.  He was a member of the Hawkeye football team from 2000-03 and played defensive tackle.  In high school, Bell was an all-district and all-area lineman at Olive Branch High School in Mississippi.

Bell is pursuing his master's degree at Wayne State College in organizational management and resides in Wayne.
